Good Background
A good & quality image starts with a good background. As a cake decorator, it’s important you choose a background that allows the beauty of your cake to shine through. You don’t want anything that will take the focus off your cake and distract your viewers. That’s why a white clean background works well for cake photography & why its the most popular background used by many prominent cake decorators.
- Tip 1: Ask a carpenter to build a mobile background & backdrop out of white wood for you.
- Tip 2: A cheaper option is using a white wall as a backdrop & a white table as the background.
For the exact mobile background & backdrop, I use, contact me for details.
Good Lighting
The light I have found that works best for mobile cake photography is Natural Light. Unless you are a professional photographer that knows how to use artificial light, I recommend using natural light any day, any time (+ it’s free compared to artificial lights that can cost up NGN 15,000 or more).
Tip 3: Take your pictures by a window or a door if your room is dark or not well lit up during the day time.
Tip 4: Place white cardboard on the opposite side of your cake (DIY reflector) so that light can reflect on to the side of your cake, eliminating shadows.
Editing
How your cake picture will look in the end all boils down to how you edit your photo. These are my go-to apps for mobile photography that gives my cake images that crisp finish & they both happen to be free:
- Adobe Photoshop Fix
Adobe Photoshop fix is a free mobile editing app that helps remove any unwanted objects or flaws/imperfections from your image. You can also lighten, heal, colour & adjust your images to perfection.
- Adobe Photoshop Lightroom
This is the most used editing app on my mobile device that makes my cake photos pop. With Lightroom, you can achieve that professional look with your images. You can brighten the image, increase or decrease the exposure & saturation etc.
One of the features I find interesting & I really love is the ability to copy the settings of an image you’ve already edited to your liking and paste that setting unto a new image and you automatically have the new image edited like the one you did previously. This allows your images to look the same every time…… Awesome, right?
